El también llamado “grupo sin grupo” y “archipiélago de soledades”, el de Contemporáneos es el nombre de un grupo de jóvenes intelectuales mexicanos, agrupados en torno a la revista Contemporáneos, que se propusieron difundir no pocas de las innovaciones del arte y la cultura en la sociedad mexicana de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Claramente abiertos a las influencias internacionales y contrarios tanto al estridentismo como a los postulados fundamentales de la cultura que se identificaba con el sustrato ideológico y con la épica de la revolución mexicana, estos autores ofrecieron sus versiones abiertamente cosmopolitas de la literatura, el teatro, las artes visuales.
Apoyadas por su gran mecenas y promotora, Antonieta Rivas Mercado, destacados los escritores Xavier Villaurrutia, Jorge Cuesta, Salvador Novo, Rodolfo Usigli, Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano, José y Jorge Gorostiza, entre otros. Artistas identificados con los Contemporáneos fueron Agustín Lazo, María Izquierdo, Mariano Silva Bandeira y Manuel Rodríguez Lozano.
Also known as the “group without a group” and the “archipelago of solitudes,” the Contemporáneos group was composed of a collective of young Mexican intellectuals gathered around the magazine Contemporáneos. They sought to promote many of the cultural and artistic innovations emerging in early 20th- century Mexican society. Open to international influences, they opposed both Stridentism and the ideological foundations of the Mexican Revolution. These authors presented their own cosmopolitan interpretations of literature, theater, and the visual arts.
Supported by their influential patron and promoter Antonieta Rivas Mercado, notable writers within the group included: Xavier Villaurrutia, Jorge Cuesta, Salvador Novo, Rodolfo Usigli, Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano, and José and Jorge Gorostiza, among others. Artists associated with the Contemporáneos group included: Agustín Lazo, María Izquierdo, Mariano Silva Bandeira, and Manuel Rodríguez Lozano.
