About the Composers
Santiago de Murcia was one of the leading figures in the history of the Spanish baroque guitar. Born in Madrid after 1682, he grew up in a family traditionally linked to the construction of guitars and the practice of this instrument at the Spanish court. It is speculated that he studied at the Royal Chapel under the tutelage of Francisco Guerau. In 1717, he published his only known printed work, the "Resumen de acompañar la parte con la guitarra", in which it is mentioned that he was guitar master to Queen Maria Luisa Gabriella of Savoy.
The presence of Santiago de Murcia's scores in Mexico is remarkable. The manuscript "Pasacalles y obras de guitarra", dedicated to José Álvarez de Saavedra in 1732 and preserved in the British Library, comes from Mexico. In addition, the last book attributed to Murcia, known as "Codex Saldívar no. 4", is preserved in the Gabriel Saldívar collection in Mexico. This codex could be a first complementary volume of "Pasacalles y obras [...]". The existence of these works in Mexico aroused the supposition, now disproved, that Santiago de Murcia may have travelled to our country at some point in his life.
A musician and dance teacher in prosperous Chalco, Joseph María García, compiled nearly 300 dances and their choreographies. Chalco was the main producer of grains and vegetables that nourished Mexico City in the 18th and 19th centuries, then connected by lakes and canals to the metropolis. The prosperous society of this town sought to reflect European good taste in its festivities, music and choreographies, beyond its rural opulence. The delicate foods they produced populate still-life paintings of the time, the faces of the family members of the rich landowners could spring out lived of the paintings of Hermenegildo Bustos.
